Usine à liège

The activity of exploitation, treatment and transformation of the cork marked the history of Porto-Vecchio. For a century, from 1876 to 1975, the Saint Joseph factory produced corks, floats for fishing nets, interior linings for colonial helmets, insulators, agglomerates.
Today the old cork factory is a cultural place; it hosts the theater company I Chjachjaroni.

Porte Génoise

Porte Génoise

The Staircase of the King of Aragon in Bonifacio, classified as a historical monument and a picturesque site of Corsica was, according to its legend, dug by hand into the limestone cliff in one night by the troops of the King of Aragon in 1420. In reality, this staircase was dug to access the Saint-Barthélemy well, a fresh water well. Today, the well is no longer in use and is closed.

Bastions de France

Bastions de France

The city is surrounded by 5 different bastions, built by the Genoese at the time: the bastion of France, the bastion of Sant’Antonu, the bastion of the Gate, the bastion San Giorgio, and the bastion of the Palace. Three of the bastions are private, one is in ruins, only the bastion of France can be visited.

Marais Salants

Marais Salants

Porto-Vecchio owes its name of « city of salt » to the twenty years of the great expansion of the saltworks between 1795 and 1815 and to the fact that the saltworks of Porto-Vecchio are the only ones existing in Corsica since that time. Thriving under the first empire, the salt marshes produced up to 10,000 quintals (1,000 tons) of salt per year, which is 1/5 of the total consumption in Corsica.the salt marshes are no longer active since the 2000s.

L'Eglise de Saint-Jean-Baptiste

L'Eglise de Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, this granite building, built on the foundations of an ancient Genoese church, dates from the 19th century. Baroque style, it has a bell tower, reminiscent of the one in Quenza, a village in the Alta Rocca. The facade of this church is unfinished but it remains one of the most elegant and visited monuments of the town.
